Adan lives at Playa Escobilla near the Pacific Ocean in Mexico. He is a fierce protector of the Olive Ridley sea turtles that nest on the beach near his home.

THE PROTECTOR introduces Adan, who is dedicated to caring for the endangered iguanas at his family’s sanctuary and protecting the sea turtles that nest on the beach near his home.
We sit beside him as he watches a mama turtle lay her eggs and then carefully collects the eggs and places them in a "nursery”, where they are safe from poachers and predators. Weeks later, he and his sister release the hatchlings into the sea.
We accompany Adan and his family as they prepare for Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, an annual fiesta that honors loved ones who have died. Adan loves this time of year, when sea turtles return to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs and the spirits of his ancestors return home for a visit.

Turtles begin as eggs laid in the sand by a mama turtle. Your goal is to keep them alive, so they can return to the same beach and lay their own eggs.
Daily Life
The film offers a window onto Adan’s daily life on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca - from feeding the iguanas's to cooking with his grandmother. Viewers are encouraged to consider and share comparisons between Adan’s life and their own.
Day of the Dead
Towns all over Mexico brim with exciting festivities and stunning displays of vibrant color during this annual holiday that celebrates loved ones who have died. Adan is looking forward to Day of the Dead.
Sea Turtles
Today, six of the seven species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered. They face natural and man-made obstacles on their journey from the nest to the ocean and man-made dangers when they come ashore to lay their eggs.
